Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus emphasized the message of unity and harmony among diverse communities in Bangladesh, calling all citizens members of one extended family. Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the ‘Harmony Building’ at the Dhaka International Buddhist Monastery on Sunday, he reflected on the rich cultural and religious diversity of the nation.

Referring to Pahela Baishakh, the Bengali New Year, which will be celebrated tomorrow, Dr. Yunus described it as one of the most powerful symbols of harmony in the country. He stated that individuals will observe the occasion in their unique ways and according to their respective traditions, but all will participate in the festival collectively, reflecting its universal and inclusive nature.

Dr. Yunus noted that the Dhaka International Buddhist Monastery stands as a significant symbol of communal harmony in Bangladesh. Since its inception, the monastery has played an important role not only for the Buddhist community but also in advancing national interests. He praised the efforts of the Buddhist community in preserving their religious, cultural, and social traditions, while also contributing to public welfare, including in the field of technical education.

Highlighting the spiritual teachings of Gautama Buddha, Dr. Yunus expressed his deep respect for the principles of non-violence and equality, which he said are essential to the Buddhist faith and vital to human civilization. He remarked that the Harmony Building will uphold these values and serve as a proud testament to Bangladesh’s legacy of compassion and mutual respect, both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Yunus recalled the historical role of Buddhist monasteries in the region as ancient centers of learning. These institutions, he said, were once pivotal educational hubs, attracting monks and students from across the world. They not only served as spaces for religious practice and teachings but were also at the heart of social welfare activities. He expressed pride in the country’s heritage of peace and harmony, which was spread globally by figures like Gautama Buddha.

Speaking about the global relevance of Buddha’s teachings, Dr. Yunus cited the life and legacy of Atiśa Dīpankara, a Buddhist scholar from Bangladesh who became a revered figure in Tibet and China. He mentioned that Dīpankara is still held in high regard across those regions, showcasing the far-reaching impact of Bangladeshi scholars and the universal message of peace they carried.

Dr. Yunus also expressed his admiration for the architectural and spiritual ambiance of the Dhaka International Buddhist Monastery, describing it as deeply moving. He emphasized that such institutions should not be seen only as places of religious significance for a particular community, but as integral parts of the country’s shared history. He urged for arrangements to be made so that young people from all communities can visit and learn from these spaces.

He regarded the construction of the Harmony Building as a commendable initiative and praised the army personnel involved in the project, calling their participation an honorable endeavor. Dr. Yunus encouraged those working on the construction to complete the project with excellence, so that it remains a lasting legacy admired by future generations.

The event, organized by the Bangladesh Buddhist Federation, was attended by several distinguished guests, including Religious Affairs Advisor Dr. A. F. M. Khalid Hossain, Advisor to the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Supradip Chakma, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-uz-Zaman, and Acting Chairman of the Buddhist Federation Professor Dr. Sukomal Barua.

The ceremony concluded with calls to preserve and promote the spirit of harmony, inclusiveness, and mutual respect that forms the foundation of the nation's cultural and religious identity.
