The authorities have issued a "red alert" across the country in an effort to capture Shah Alam, the former Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Uttara East Thana, who escaped from custody. The current OIC of the same thana, Mahibullah, has been suspended from his post.
On Friday afternoon, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Uttara Division, Rawnak Jahan, confirmed the situation to the media. He stated that a joint operation involving the army, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and all police units has been launched to locate and arrest Shah Alam.
The incident occurred on Thursday, January 9, when Shah Alam, who had been arrested in connection with a case related to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, was in the process of being presented in court. However, he managed to escape under suspicious circumstances.
Reports from multiple sources at the thana indicated that Shah Alam, an accused in a murder case, had been placed in a room at the thana rather than in a detention cell. He managed to escape from this room on Thursday.
The current OIC of Uttara East Thana, Mahibullah, confirmed the escape and mentioned that the authorities, including the army, RAB, and police, are utilizing all available resources to capture Shah Alam. "We are using technology and other means to track his whereabouts, and we hope to arrest him soon," Mahibullah added.
According to Mohammad Talebur Rahman, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Media and Public Relations Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Shah Alam had been accused in a murder case filed in relation to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The case had been lodged on September 2, and Shah Alam was arrested on Wednesday. He was supposed to be brought to court on Thursday, but he escaped during the process.
As a result of the negligence, one Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) has been temporarily dismissed. Shah Alam had joined the Uttara East Thana on August 1 of the previous year and was involved in multiple criminal cases related to the student movement.
Shah Alam, who previously served as the OIC of Shahbagh Thana, was accused of playing a controversial role during the student protests in July. Allegations of involvement in the deaths of students during the protests had been made against him. He was arrested on Wednesday evening from Kushtia and was brought to Uttara East Thana late at night.
A team from DMP arrested Shah Alam from the Kushtia Police Lines area on Wednesday evening. The operation was carried out by Uttara East Thana's Sub-Inspector (SI) Liton Sharif, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) A. Jabbar, and Constables Billal and Sohel. After the arrest, Shah Alam was brought to the thana, where he was placed under temporary custody. However, he escaped from the thana later that day.
It has been reported that Shah Alam asked for permission to go to the toilet before making his escape from the thana. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his escape and are intensifying efforts to track him down.
